Description of the building

The history

Before 1819, on the site where Aparthotel Nowy Świat 28 is now located, there was a brick, two-storey tenement house of Franciszek Wojciechowski. It was erected on the site of the wooden manor of Andrzej Czaplinski from before 1770.

In 1829, there were brick side outbuildings in the back, of which only the southern one was connected with the front house. At the end of the 19th century, the eastern part of the property was sold, and the outbuilding was joined to the Foksal 15 estate.

Around 1910-1911, the owner Kazimierz Mèyet rebuilt the front house, giving the façade the characteristics of early modernism. Three floors were addend to the building, and the facade was decorated with a massive top, spreading over its entire width. At that time, the transverse outbuilding was demolished and a new one was built, slightly shifting its location. This is where the current Aparthotel Nowy Świat 28 is located.

During World War II, in 1944, the front house was demolished down to the foundations, and the side annexes were burnt. Only the transverse outbuilding (currently Aparthotel Nowy Świat 28) persisted, with only its roof damaged.

After the war, in the years 1946-1947, a new two-storey house was built, loosely referring to the original. The side annexes were demolished and the transverse outbuilding was rebuilt, remaining the only relic of the original building.
